Whiskers & Wards

A cozy paranormal mystery where opinionated cats, a Victorian estate, and small-town secrets complicate one very practical plan.

Clara expects six weeks in Whispering Falls; instead, a murder, talking cats, and failing magical wards give her a very different list to manage.

Hazel Whitmore answers our questions about Whiskers & Wards

We asked about the book’s origin, cover, writing process, atmosphere, and intended reader experience — then shaped those answers into this feature.

Origin

Why this book exists

Hazel Whitmore tells IndieBookStories that Whiskers & Wards grew from the things she loves: cats with enormous personalities, old houses, small-town mysteries, and magic close to ordinary life. She also wanted a heroine who meets the supernatural with a project manager’s instinct to make a plan. At the heart of the book is a quieter question: what if the life you thought you wanted is not the one you end up choosing? Clara comes to Whispering Falls for six weeks, expecting to leave. The house, the town, and its cats begin to unsettle that certainty.
On why this book exists

“cats with enormous personalities, old houses with histories of their own, small towns where everyone knows more than they admit”

On why this book exists

“magic might be woven into ordinary life rather than hidden in some distant fantasy world.”

Behind the book

The human story behind it

On courage

“Her instinct is to figure out what is happening, make a list, identify the risks, and develop a plan.”

Whitmore’s working life helped shape Clara’s practical approach. After years in technical project management, she understood the appeal of sorting a complicated situation into risks, lists, and next steps. Her own writing path took a less expected turn: she had written versions of this story for years but assumed she belonged in nonfiction, until she gave herself permission to write what she wanted. She shares that she wrote the book while living in Phnom Penh, far from the Pennsylvania Poconos setting. That distance made the details of Whispering Falls—its streets, seasons, and layout—all the more important to get right.

Reader experience

What kind of journey is this?

On the story’s pace and mood

“The mystery matters, but so do the relationships, the town, the cats, and Clara figuring out whether Whispering Falls might actually be home.”

Whitmore describes the book as a cozy paranormal mystery with talking cats, gentle magic, small-town secrets, found family, and a slow-burn romance beneath the central story. Clara is juggling a murder investigation with an inherited estate, a weakening ward system, and cats who know more than they say. The result makes room for both the mystery and the everyday texture of getting to know a place: its people, relationships, and familiar corners. The tone is warm and witty rather than dark, with magic woven into an ordinary world. Readers can expect a story that balances questions to solve with the pleasure of spending time in a town and discovering whether it might become home.

A visual glimpse into the book’s atmosphere

The images around Whiskers & Wards draw on details Hazel Whitmore shared with IndieBookStories: cats with distinct personalities, an old Victorian estate, and a cozy Pennsylvania town framed by autumn leaves and wooded hills. Faint golden traces of magic connect the house and its surroundings, keeping the mood warm, colorful, and just a little mysterious.

The Cats of the Estate

The cats are part of the household—and very much part of the story.

Whispering Falls Main Street

Autumn leaves and warm shop windows sketch the town Clara is beginning to learn.

Reader response

How readers may feel

On how readers may feel

“I want readers to feel like they have found a place they want to come back to.”

Whitmore hopes readers will laugh at the cats, enjoy the mystery, and grow attached to Clara and the people around her. She describes wanting Whispering Falls to feel like a place readers might want to return to—a town where the shops, people, and cats begin to feel familiar. That may make this a comforting read for someone who likes a mystery alongside a sense of community, and a story that leaves room to wonder what Clara will do next.
Reader fit

Who this book is for

This may suit readers looking for a cozy mystery with gentle paranormal elements, rather than a dark or high-intensity supernatural story. It brings together talking cats with distinct personalities, an old house with magical wards, a murder to investigate, and a small town with its own history. Readers who enjoy practical heroines, found family, a slow-burn romance in the background, and the gradual feeling of getting to know a place may find a welcome mix here. It may also appeal to cat lovers who enjoy seeing the animals play an active part in the story.
A useful note

Who this may not be for

If you want a fast, hard-edged crime story, a grim atmosphere, or magic that dominates every part of the plot, this may not be the right fit. Whitmore describes the book as warm and cozy, with gentle magic and relationships sharing space with the murder mystery. The cats are characters rather than background decoration, and the romance unfolds slowly beneath the main story.

Behind the cover

On the cover

“The cats needed to be front and center because they are not background decoration in this series.”

Whitmore wanted the cover to feel magical, cozy, colorful, and a little mysterious. She explains that the cats belong front and center: they are characters in their own right, with Bartles especially important to Clara’s story. The old house and magical details hint at the Blackwood estate and its ward system, while keeping the overall impression warm and inviting rather than dark. The cover’s mix of cats, house, and magic reflects the balance the book offers inside.

Writing room

From the author’s desk

Whitmore says she writes quickly once she knows the story, but building Whispering Falls took more than drafting Book One: she was working out the town, magical rules, history, cats, and relationships across the series. She wrote while living in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, and says being far from the Pennsylvania setting made her pay close attention to where everything sat and what the seasons felt like. There were usually cats nearby, sometimes on the very things she was trying to use. She currently lives with thirteen.
